Sg2 analysis highlights effectiveness of fall detection sensor technologies

Data & analytics

IRVING, Texas, Sept. 10, 2025Sg2 today released a new analysis showing a correlation between reduced number of falls and the resources healthcare facilities invest in fall-detection sensor technology. Read Advancing hospital fall prevention strategies with sensor-driven insights.

Using data from 750 hospitals in the Vizient Clinical Data Base, the report analyzed more than 30,000 falls over three years. Facilities with higher spend on fall prevention sensor technology saw observed reductions in fall rates of up to 30% compared to baseline, with consistently greater improvements than hospitals with no sensor spend. The impact was consistent across hospital types, with the greatest gains seen in high-acuity settings where baseline fall risk is higher.

“Sensor technology, when integrated into a broader, multidisciplinary fall prevention strategy, is proving to be a game-changer for patient safety,” said David DiLoreto MD, principal, Sg2. “Our findings demonstrate that aligning investment with clinical workflows delivers measurable results for patients and hospitals alike.”

Hospitals with no investment in sensor technology experience a 20–30% increase in falls, highlighting the risks of inaction. Facilities with some sensor spend see moderate improvements, achieving a 10–15% reduction in falls. The most significant impact occurs among hospitals with high sensor investment, which achieve a 20–30% reduction in falls.

Beyond technology, the report urges hospitals to take a holistic approach for fall prevention. combining universal fall precautions, environmental design improvements, staff training, leadership engagement, and patient and family education. Read the full report.
