Preventing Adverse Events in the Operating Room

More than two hundred million surgeries are performed worldwide each year according to Patient Safety in Surgery. Despite multiple safety efforts, adverse event rates for surgical conditions remain elevated. The surgical environment requires thorough communications, teamwork, and decision-making to ensure safety since 43% to 91% of adverse events and near misses in the operating room relate to miscommunication. This program will highlight Collaborative participants’ achievements establishing standardized communication and specimen management protocols.
