Howard Kern is president and CEO of Sentara Healthcare, a not-for-profit integrated health care organization in Virginia with net revenues of $6.3 billion. Sentara is comprised of 12 acute care hospitals, four nursing and rehabilitation centers and one assisted living community, with approximately 1,000 providers in four medical groups. Sentara also operates a health plan with 500,000 covered lives in Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio.
Kern was recognized as #58 on Modern Healthcare's 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare in 2018. He has nearly 40 years of executive management experience spanning hospital, managed health insurance, ambulatory services and health care finance leadership.
Kern obtained his master’s degree in health administration from the Medical College of Virginia and is on the faculty as a lecturer in the School of Health Administration. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and also completed the CEO Program for Health Care Leadership at the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Kern serves on the board or as a member of numerous corporate and community organizations, including the Becker’s Healthcare Advisory Board, E3 (Elevate Early Education), Future Hampton Roads, Hampton Roads Business Roundtable, Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance, MDLive, ReInvent Hampton Roads, Richmond/Hampton Roads Collaborative Executive Committee, Virginia Business Council, Virginia Business Higher Education Council, Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Virginia Wesleyan University.
He was appointed in November 2019 to Virginia Governor Northam’s Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates (GACRE). He previously served on the boards of HealthEast (St. Paul, Minn.), Norfolk State University and Westminster Canterbury Chesapeake Bay.
