Dean Gruner, MD, is the president and CEO of ThedaCare, Inc., a community-owned health system. ThedaCare consists of Appleton Medical Center, Theda Clark Medical Center, New London Family Medical Center, Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca, ThedaCare Physicians and other health care services.

Gruner has 28 years of experience creating new models of health care delivery, financing and quality improvement. At ThedaCare, these achievements include collaborative care, a redesigned primary care model and a business performance system.

Gruner has served in multiple leadership positions with ThedaCare and its affiliates since it was founded as Novus Health Group in 1987, including chief medical officer and senior vice president. He was one of the founding physicians of Touchpoint and was a practicing family physician with Family Doctors, S.C., which affiliated with ThedaCare in 1994.

Gruner earned his undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. He completed his graduate training and family practice residency at St. Michael’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Gruner was board certified by the American Board of Family Practice from 1983 to 2010 and practiced medicine in the Fox Cities from 1983 to 2000. He earned his master’s degree in medical management through Tulane University and ACPE in 2000.
